Defending the Holy Land

Defending the Holy Land

On May 14, 1948 Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, momentously announced to the world from the Tel Aviv Art Museum, “We hereby declare the establishment of the Jewish state in Eretz Yisrael—the State of Israel!” But just a few hours later, the Arab armies of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon invaded Israeli territory, determined to extinguish the new country. Israel’s War of Independence had begun. The need for an officially recognized and fully operational Israeli military division was clear.

Ben Gurion himself launched the Tzva Haganah Leyisrael, Israel Defence Forces (IDF), twelve days later, on May 26, 1948. Headquartered at HaKirya in Tel Aviv, the IDF is presently comprised of an army, air force (IAF) and navy. It has served Israel in all of its conflicts including the 1967 Six Day War, the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and the Lebanon Wars of 1982 and 2006. It has also performed military operations, such as the spectacular rescue of Jewish civilian hostages at Entebbe Airport, Uganda, in 1976.

Shedding Light on the Ruins

Shedding Light on the Ruins

Before their music grabs you,  the title will.  New Light Ruins is not your stereotypical name for a band. Infact, there is nothing stereotypical about the young folk rock trio from California. Originally influenced by the pioneers of Messianic music, their combined talents are forging a new sound for a new generation—another venue to share the Good News.

It's been said that life is a journey. For folk rock trio New Light Ruins, it's not only been a journey of faith, but a physical one, taking the California band mates—Isaac Brickner, Sterling Reed, and Remy Remigio—to some of the most remote places on earth.

Substance addiction is a topic seldom mentioned or even admitted within the Body of Messiah. Yet it exists, and the numbers are surprising. Until recent times, little has been openly discussed about this affliction. There’s a universal stigma affiliated with such a verboten subject; so what kind of coping mechanisms and resources are available to Messianic believers?

Daniel Yitzchak will never forget the courage it took to make this admission. "I began drinking when I was 15, because I wanted to fit in with my friends,” he acknowledges. But his alcoholism became out of control after he returned to Ohio from military service. "I had served in Vietnam, and had watched my friends die. Making the transition from constant danger to normal life was completely overwhelming. Beer became my escape. It helped put things in the back of my mind, so I didn’t have to think."

A New Year Rolls By in Columbus, Ohio

A New Year Rolls By in Columbus, Ohio

During a crowded Rosh Hashanah service at his parents' Conservative synagogue,Howard Silverman leaned toward his Orthodox-raised mother and whispered, "You know, Mom, a Christian is someone who believes Jesus is the Messiah, and a Jewish person can believe this, too." Since the presiding rabbi had mentioned Christians in his message, it seemed a good time for the 19-year-old to share this news. It was 1976. Older and wiser now, Messianic Rabbi Silverman does not recommend anyone follow his example.
