“Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, says the L-rd.” This Word of the L-rd came to and through Haggai, the prophet, as G-d desired to see the building of the second Temple in Jerusalem. G-d was very troubled, according to the Book of Haggai, that the people were more concerned with building their own homes while the Temple was in ruins. Believers today, of course, live in a post Temple era; however, we hope their aspirations reach beyond just building one’s own home. Congregation Beth Yeshua of Philadelphia did not build the Second Temple and their previous building was not in ruins, but in their own way they answered the call to better serve their congregants and the community by building a bigger and better sanctuary in which they celebrated their first Shabbat service and Bat Mitzvah on September 16, 2022.
