Was Qasem Soleimani’s recent death a “moment of liberation?” Purim is many things to many people and, like most Jewish holidays, replete with paradox. It is the “classic account of our people’s confrontation with brute anti-Semitism,” wrote the late Dr. Rabbi David Hartman, founder of Jerusalem’s Shalom Hartman Institute in his paper, Joy in the Midst of Uncertainty. “…[We] were threatened with extinction…Haman’s genocidal scheme was not realized… [It is] a moment of liberation from the designs of the ‘Hamas’ of history.”
